NIÉPCE: 200 YEARS LATER, PHOTOGRAPHY CREATES ITS OWN CURRENCY
There are moments in the history of photography that seem separated by centuries, yet somehow end up meeting again.
Around 1826, Nicéphore Niépce was working at his home in Le Gras, France, experimenting with a camera obscura and light-sensitive materials. His efforts resulted in View from the Window at Le Gras, the oldest surviving photograph and one of the images that changed humanity’s relationship with light, time and memory.
Almost 200 years later, photography has transformed almost beyond recognition.
Cameras have become digital. Film has become pixels. Images can cross the world in seconds. Photographers can reach millions of people from a phone. And today, companies increasingly use followers, engagement, reach, views and other metrics to try to measure the value or level of a photographer.
But perhaps photography is more than numbers.
And that is where a completely different idea begins.
While companies continue asking for metrics to measure photographers, a real photographer—passionate about the true essence of photography—created a virtual currency in honor of one of the greatest pioneers in the history of the medium: Nicéphore Niépce.
Its name is NIÉPCE.
Created by Maximiliano Blanco, founder and creator of La Liga Fotográfica VIP, NIÉPCE was born from a simple but unusual question:
What if photography had its own currency?
FROM PHOTOGRAPHY TO A VIRTUAL CURRENCY
NIÉPCE is already being used inside the Prediction Zone of La Liga Fotográfica VIP, where it currently has a very specific purpose: it is a virtual currency that participants can use to play and become part of the prediction experience within the platform.
Today, NIÉPCE is a game.
But the idea is not limited to the game.
The long-term vision is to develop NIÉPCE into a virtual currency designed specifically for photographers and for the photography community.
A currency that could eventually be connected to photography competitions, workshops, education, experiences, prizes, benefits, products, services and other opportunities within a broader photographic ecosystem.
It is important to make one thing clear: NIÉPCE is currently a virtual currency used within La Liga Fotográfica VIP. It is not being presented today as a cryptocurrency or as a currency with financial value outside the platform.
What matters is the idea behind it—and what it could become.
WHY NIÉPCE?
The name is not accidental.
Almost two centuries ago, Niépce was trying to achieve something that today seems almost ordinary: to make an image produced by light permanent.
He was not thinking about Instagram.
He was not thinking about followers.
He was not thinking about algorithms.
He was simply trying to capture an image.
And that is precisely why his name felt right.
NIÉPCE is a tribute to the person who helped make photography possible, created at a moment when photography itself is entering another technological transformation.
In 1826, the challenge was to preserve the image.
In 2026, the challenge is different:
How can we create new ways to recognize, connect and generate value around the people who create those images?
MORE THAN NUMBERS
Photography today exists in a world obsessed with metrics.
How many followers do you have?
How many likes?
How many views?
What is your engagement rate?
How much reach can you generate?
Those numbers can be useful. They can help brands and companies understand audiences and campaigns. But they cannot completely explain what makes a photographer a photographer.
They cannot measure the emotion behind an image.
They cannot measure the years spent learning.
They cannot measure the patience of waiting for the right moment.
They cannot measure the decision to press the shutter at precisely the right fraction of a second.
And they certainly cannot measure passion.
That is why the story of NIÉPCE is not really a story about money.
It is a story about value.
The value of photography.
The value of the photographer.
The value of the community.
And the possibility of creating new ways for that value to circulate.
200 YEARS LATER
There is something almost poetic about the timing.
Around 1826, Niépce created an image that would survive for generations.
Around 200 years later, a photographer named Maximiliano Blanco creates a virtual currency carrying his name.
One was created with light.
The other was created with an idea.
One helped photography preserve moments.
The other seeks, over time, to create new possibilities for the people who continue capturing them.
For now, NIÉPCE lives inside the Prediction Zone of La Liga Fotográfica VIP.
It is a game.
It is an experiment.
It is an idea.
And perhaps, someday, it could become something much bigger: a virtual currency created for photographers, by someone who understands photography not only as a business, but as a passion, a profession, a community and a way of seeing the world.
Two hundred years after Niépce pointed his camera toward a window in France, photography is still experimenting.
This time, the experiment is not with a photographic plate.
It is with a currency.
Its name is NIÉPCE.
And this may only be the beginning.
